The difference between SS304 and SS316

The main differences between 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel are:

Differences in the main components of both metal

304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel contain about 16 ~ 18% chromium, but 304 stainless steel contains 9% nickel on average, and 316 stainless steel contains 12% nickel on average.Nickel in metal materials can improve high temperature durability, improve mechanical properties, and improve oxidation resistance. Therefore, the amount of nickel in the material directly affects the overall performance of the material.

Differences in material properties

304 stainless steel is austenitic stainless steel, which cannot be strengthened by heat treatment, cannot be quenched like carbon steel, and has no magnetic properties. The various mechanical properties of 304 are relatively excellent, with considerable corrosion resistance and high temperature resistance. It is the most widely used as stainless heat-resistant steel.
316 stainless steel is the second most widely used steel after 304. Its main characteristics are that it has a higher resistance to acid and alkali and high temperature than 304. It is mainly used in the food industry and surgical equipment. Another significant feature is that there is basically no thermal expansion and contraction, which is extremely important for precision parts.
